Wrought iron lamp by Francis Dewaele & Les Artisans de Marolles.
This rare wrought iron lamp, created in 1955 by Francis Dewaele for Les Artisans de Marolles under Jean Touret’s direction, exemplifies refined French artisanal design.
Its minimalist form features a clean-lined base and a cylindrical shade resting lightly on three iron prongs, with a spear-like finial adding a sculptural touch.
The contrast between the stark shade and the brutalist iron creates a striking balance, highlighting Dewaele’s craftsmanship and the meticulous quality typical of the Marolles workshop. A similar model was sold at Piasa Paris on February 23, 2023.
Les Artisans de Marolles, founded by Jean Touret in 1950 to preserve local craftsmanship in the face of industrialization, brought together artisans—including blacksmiths like Dewaele—to produce distinctive furniture and lighting.
Their work, now celebrated for its integrity and artistry, was exhibited widely until the group’s dissolution in 1970. Literature reference: L’éclairage dans la maison, L. Rodighiero, Ed. Charles Massin, 1969, similar model p. 21.
